ARITHMETICS OF CHESS FINANCE

On the site WorldofChess.ru there was an article by the master FIDE Maria Larina, in which she painted in paints the conditions in which the «world's largest open-tournament» Moscow Open took place. Leaking roof, broken toilet doors, dirt, mess and crowdedness. Participants, elbows pushing each other, and playing on sets of chess of different sizes. «And all this - with 10-, and for someone and 15-thousand installments?» - The girl is indignant.
Having learned about such organizational chaos, we asked ourselves why do people continue to play in tournaments held in the halls of the RSSU? And at the same time, we compared the conditions for participants in the 2300 rating category in terms of the price / quality ratio in three competitions - the Moscow Open, the Aeroflot Open and the Chess Tournament, which will be held on April 1-7 in Sochi.

Just say that the comparison with Aeroflot Open is honored. For many years, this flagship open tournament set the standard for the quality of mass tournaments, and after he moved to the hotel «Cosmos», claims from its members did not arise. All the organizers were equal to him...

Well, let's compare the three open tournaments - Moscow Open «C» (MO), Aeroflot Open "C" (AO) and Chess Amateurs (CA) on key parameters!

Game days, the beginning of rounds:
     MO — 9 days; tours - at 16:00 (9th - 11:00)
AO — 9 days; all tours are at 15:00
CA — 7 days; all tours are at 10:00

Location:
MO — Moscow, the audience RSSU, 20 boards in each
     AO — Moscow, conference room "Space" *, 500+ seats (together A + B + C)
CA — Sochi, conference hall Bridge Resort **, 500+ beds

Prize fund:
     MO — 450,000 rubles (first prize - 70,000), 18 prizes
     AO — 1,225,000 rubles* (the first prize - 210,000), 35 prizes
     CA — 1,850,000 rubles (first prize - 300,000), 30 + 15 additional prizes

Entrance fee:
MO — 1000/1500/2000/2500 depending on the rating
AO — from 17,500 to 28,000 depending on the date (cf = 22,000)
CA — 15,000 for all participants (in the "package" price)

Accommodation:
     MO — 16,000 for 10 nights in a hotel 2** without meals
     AO — 28,000 for 10 nights in a 3*** hotel with breakfast
CA — 15,000 for 8 nights in a 4**** hotel with full board

Total. Even if you disregard the conditions for the game and the level of accommodation, meals and services that the hotel provides at the Moscow Open, Aeroflot Open and the Lovers' Tournament, and simply divide the size of the prize pool and the first prize by the amount that the player must spend on the tournament fee and living, such, extremely curious figures will turn out:

     — Мoscow Оpen - 25 - 3.9
     — Aeroflot Open - 24.5 - 4.2
     — Chess Amateurs - 61.6 - 10

In other words, if you come to the Moscow Open and live in a non-catering tourist inn (16,000), pay a 2,000 contribution, then you invest 1/25 of the total tournament prize pool and 1 / 3.9 of the first prize. In this case, you still need to eat independently, somehow relax, etc. For Aeroflot-open, these figures are slightly better, but they are not too optimistic either.

At the same time there are people who consider the Moscow openings to be economically profitable for the strongest participants. Compare these figures - and you will discover something about the Tournament of Lovers. Not to mention the trickles of water from the roof...

* - all prices in the Aeroflot Open in euro, at the rate of €1 = 70 rubles
